Sister

The Mangala Gaur devi at this temple is the sister of the lord Kashi Vishwanath. Its a tradition to visit here just before you leave Kashi. You buy sea shells at this place and offer them to God saying that the virtues of donating the shells goes to her while you keep the virtues of having visited the holy shrines in Kashi and bathing in the ganga. The trip to Kashi is to yield results only after completing this custom.

Story
Once Lord Surya installed a Shiv Ling and a devi idol at Panchanada Teerth (Panchganga Ghat) and started immensely praying to Lord Shiva.  (Importance of Panchganga Ghat is described under River Ganga-Teerths category).

The intensity of Lord Surya’s prayers started reflecting in the extreme heat generated thereby.  Sunrays started getting warmer and warmer. Finally it became unbearable for all living beings and all physical activities practically came to a standstill.

Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvaty came to know about this and they appeared in person in front of Lord Surya.  Lord Surya opened his eyes and started singing praises of Goddess Parvaty and Lord Shiva whereupon both of them became extremely happy.  They granted several divine wishes to Lord Surya.

Lord Shiva told Lord Surya that the devi idol installed by the latter would be known as Mangala Gauri. A person who worships Mangala Gauri with all devotion is blessed with all happiness and prosperity.  Unmarried girls will soon find a suitable match for themselves and childless couples will be blessed with  children.

Special importance is laid by Kashi Khand, Chapter 49 for Chaitra Month (March-April), Shukla Paksha Tritheeya (3rd Day after amavasya) for worshipping this Goddess.

LOCATION

Mangala Gauri is located at K-24/34, Panchganga Ghat.  Devotees can travel upto Bhaironath by auto or cycle rickshaw and walk upto this place.  Mangala Gauri temple is a famous landmark. Alternatively, they can take a boat ride upto Panchganga Ghat and reach this temple through Ghats.

TYPES OF POOJA

The temple is open from 05.00 a.m. to 01.00 p.m. and from 03.00 p.m. to 10 p.m.  Aarties are performed in the evening.  For doing any special pooja etc., it is advisable to contact the Poojari.  There is usually a large crowd on Tuesdays and locals say that many unmarried girls have had their wishes fulfilled by praying at this temple.  Mangala Gauri is one of the 9 Gauris which are worshipped in Navratri falling in March-April (9 days preceding Ram Navami).

trident

Uttarakashi - Opposite to Kashi Vishwanath temple there is a temple of Parvati Mata in which there is a huge trident (trishul). Nobody knows how old it is nor are they able to find its depth. Scientists have also failed to recognize what metal it is built of. The story says it is Devi's trishul and it is so deep it goes to patal loka. Its size and weight is so much that it may become difficult to move but then it is possible to shake it with one finger! It's magical!

Vatsyayan

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V%C4%81tsy%C4%81yana

Vatsyayan Gotra is classified under the Saraswat Brahmin sect. They are generally concentrated in North India.

The Vatsyayan Gotra is a genetic lineage of the Sage Vatsayan and his disciples in the Gurukul in Varanasi. Majority of the disciples were sent to the Himalayan Hindu kingdom to promote not only Hinduism, but to put an end to the pagan ritual sacrifices of the tribal lords in the Himalayan region. The vatsayan missionaries evolved the Tantric goddess Tara to yet another fertility goddess 'Kam-ek-he' worshipped in the Garo hills of the eastern Himalayan hills. The legend of Kamakhya believed to have appeared in the Kaliki Puran with the cult of 'Shakti' in the worship of fertility goddess. The temple of 'Kamakya' was destroyed in the Shan invasion in 12 C. The Vatsayan clans fled through the inner Himalaya to Kashmir. The Vatsayans in the Punjab region have descended from Kashmir. Vatsyayan Gotra claim its lineage from Maha Rishi Vatsyayan of the Kamasutra fame, although the authourship if the treatise is debated. Families of Vatsyayan Gotra are said to have existed in the town of Pattan in Kashmir and later to a village named Gion in Kashmir, till the 11th century AD. Following annexations by the hands of Mughal Kings, they were forced to leave their places and migrate to Sind province, while the original migrants descended to the foothills of Shivalliks in remote hill forests to sanctify the fertility goddess, while others settled down near the towns of Kangra and Una of the Undivided Punjab or towns like Hosiyarpur

Theories also postulate that Acharya Chanakya belonged to the Vatsyayan clan Seeing this experts have fixed the time of Vatsyayan as when Patna was famous as Pataliputra.
Vatsyayans of North and East India (UP, Bihar and Bengal) consider themselves as the descendants of Chanakya.

Vatsyayan was the Pratisamskrita of the earlier works of Barabhra Muni. Vatsya then redacted the work of Kamasutra. This means that Maharishi Vatsyayan was before Vatsya.
Vatsya was also the commentator of Kashyapa samhita which means that time of Vatsyayan was much before Kautilya thus removing the doubts that Chanakya was Vatsyayan himself.
The name of Vatsyayan also appears in the Vedas as the commentator of Gautam sutra of Nyaya darshan and its time is said to be around 400 BCE

Padma Puran - World Conquest

Once, Sages requested Sutji to describe about Sri Ram's return from Lanka. Sutji narrated the same tale, which Sheshnag had once told Vatsyayan.
